WalkaboutWirt Blog Post #1
This is my first blog, so I will start off with introducing myself, the focus of this endeavour, and why I’ve decided to invest my time and energy into this creation.
My name is Greg(ory) Wirt. I answer to any one of the possible combinations; or Wirty. Born in the incredible state of Montana at a time that synchronized perfectly for participation in a war going on half way around the world in Southeast Asia. Which gives a pointer to my age for some of you insuppressible sleuths. A western Montana upbringing gave me a great appreciation for the beautiful world of Nature that surrounded me.
After serving two years in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and two years afterwards attaining an associate degree in computer science near Seattle, I went looking for work and adventure in Australia in 1972. I found both . . . and stayed.
Why mention those points above? What do they have to do with this blog? There were at least three events of great impact in my life in those locations that contributed to shaping the focus of this forum. Which is: how the effects of trauma in our lives shapes us as people through the way we handle it – and how we can learn to empower ourselves through the process rather than be a victim to it.
We have all encountered trauma in various forms with varying impacts which alter our lives -subtly to dramatically - changing our wellbeing and behaviour in the process. It can be quite obvious with a tragic event, or with gradual subtle shifts which are often undetected at the time. They can hide behind many masks. They may or may not be desirable. Effects can accumulate and pop out of nowhere like a pimple in a prominent body location we can’t ignore - mentally, emotionally, or physically.
In 2000, the growing emotional boil within me burst open. I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It was bit like discovering another appendage growing out of my body that I didn’t really want or understand how it came into being – and yet it was there for me to deal with. In hindsight, I can see the symptoms building that resulted in a condition I only saw as stress at the time. Coming into awareness was step 1 of a long journey towards overcoming the effects and rediscovering peace of mind and the joy we were born with.
It initiated some ten years of determined seeking, discovering, learning, and moving forward. I realized there really was no going ‘back’. It was go ahead or go under. There were many doorways I looked into on my investigative efforts, which eventually took me beyond the ‘normal’ I sought to return to.
There are many valuable tools and techniques I discovered outside the conventional treatment methods, not common knowledge, which proved successful for me. In 2011 I began working on a book with the intention of helping others through the lessons that I learned along my way. My journey was far from over, but I commenced anyway in the knowledge I still hadn’t reached the point of my desire. I just kept working on that intention. I continue with that still. D-Tour: My Unexpected Journey to Joy through PTSD was finally published in February 2019, becoming available as a paperback and e-book.
The impact of trauma-related stress is affecting every one of us, directly or indirectly. It has become more and more of a global epidemic, dramatically impacting humans, animals and the planet itself. Let’s make PTSD: Prevent Trauma and Stress Disorder through greater awareness and action. We can - with Connection, Community, Compassion, Creativity, Caring, Collaboration, Consciousness, Camaraderie, and Commitment.
It has been a year since the welcome relief of that long-awaited birth of my book. I am now seeking methods to explore and expand ways of reaching out to help others understand the nebulous of trauma and its ramifications in order to prevent and manage the effects. Hence I am engaging in more direct community connections that a book may not reach, with more expansive use of social media methods to include blogging. Watch this space …
